FAQ

What is the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge?

Now in its 22nd year, the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge (MCBC) is a week-long, free and friendly competition amongst Massachusetts businesses, educational institutions, and municipalities. We invite anyone who lives, works or attends school in Massachusetts to register and take a few short (or even long) trips by bicycle during Bay State Bike Week, which runs from May 14-22nd 2016.

What is MassCommute?

MassCommute is a nonprofit organization representing twelve Massachusetts Transportation Management Associations (TMAs), each created to improve commuter options in specific geographic areas or transportation corridors in Massachusetts. Collectively, the TMAs of MassCommute provide commuter services to over 300 businesses and over 300,000 employees in 40 municipalities across the Commonwealth. TMA membership is not required to participate in the MassCommute Bicycle Challenge.

What is Bay State Bike Week?

Bay State Bike Week is a special promotion created by MassCommute in 2008 as a way to unify the promotion of cycling activities across Massachusetts during National Bike Week. The MassCommute Bicycle Challenge was then and remains the Commonwealth’s signature event of Bay State Bike Week. In order to focus its efforts on promoting the Challenge, MassCommute ceded the organization of Bay State Bike week to MassBike in 2011. You can visit the Bay State Bike Week website to find out about great events throughout the Commonwealth during Bike Week.

Why are we doing this?

MassCommute is committed to the promotion of bicycling as an efficient, convenient and viable alternative means of transportation, whether it is for commuting, running errands, or fitness and recreation. National research suggests that 40% of all trips are less than two miles. Using a bicycle for some or all of those trips can have a profound personal and societal impact, such as:

Increases fitness and reduces obesity
Reduces commuter costs
Improves air quality
Decreases auto congestion
Reduces infrastructure and facilities costs
Reduces dependence on foreign oil
And... it’s FUN!!

Why are teams workplace based?

Any individual is welcome to participate in the MCBC. Teams are workplace based because MassCommute works with Massachusetts employers to improve their employees' commuting choices, including bicycling.

What type of miles count toward my total?

In 2016, all of the miles you ride will count towards your individual and team total, no matter what the purpose for travel is. We at MassCommute would like to especially encourage you to ride your bike for transportation. Cycling is a great way to get to work or school, to run errands and to get around in general!
